Web Accessibility and Typography: WCAG Contrast Ratios and Fluid Sizing.

Understand the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), calculate relative luminance, and implement fluid accessible typography.

1. Accessibility as a Quality Standard

Over 1 billion people worldwide experience some form of visual, motor, or cognitive disability. Creating an accessible web application is not just an ethical and legal imperative; it directly expands your audience reach and improves structural SEO performance.

2. WCAG Color Contrast Ratios

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2) define specific contrast thresholds between foreground text and its background:

  • Level AA (Minimum Requirement): Standard text must have a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1. Large text (18pt+ or 14pt bold) requires 3:1.
  • Level AAA (Enhanced): Standard text requires 7:1, and large text requires 4.5:1.

3. Fluid Typography with CSS clamp()

Rather than maintaining dozens of rigid media queries, modern CSS enables continuous fluid scaling:

font-size: clamp(1rem, 0.8rem + 1vw, 1.5rem);
